Often a failed capacitor on single-phase units, a sheared drive key, a stripped gear or a broken chain.

Shutter moves down but not up

Frequently a limit, contactor or control fault rather than the motor itself.

Door stops short of fully open or closed

Limits have drifted, or a safety device is intervening early.

Motor trips the supply repeatedly

Overload caused by binding guides, failed bearings or spring imbalance — resetting alone will not fix it.

No response at all from the controls

Isolator, supply, emergency stop, safety edge circuit or control station failure.

Why these faults develop

  • Running a heavy or binding curtain that overloads the motor over time
  • Water ingress into external key switches, control boxes and cabling
  • Vibration loosening terminals and wearing control cabling at the drive
  • Spring balance never adjusted, leaving the motor carrying the full curtain weight
  • Age — capacitors, contactors and limit assemblies are wearing parts

What to do immediately

Before the engineer arrives

  • Stop repeatedly operating the controls; repeated attempts damage drive components and overheat motors.
  • Check whether the isolator is on and whether an emergency stop has been pressed.
  • Note exactly what happens: silence, humming, a click, or a motor running with no movement.
  • If there is a burning smell, isolate the supply if safe and do not attempt further operation.

How we diagnose the problem

Diagnosis before parts

Replacing components without establishing the cause is how doors end up failing twice. This is the sequence our engineers work through.

    Supply and isolation are confirmed first, then the control circuit is tested step by step from the station to the contactor.

    The motor is tested under load; a motor that runs freely off-load can still be failing.

  3. 3

    Drive train components — key, coupling, chain, sprockets and gearbox — are inspected before condemning the motor.

  4. 4

    Curtain balance and guide friction are checked so a replacement motor is not fitted into the same overload condition.

Not necessarily. A humming motor is often a failed capacitor, a sheared key or a broken drive chain. We test before recommending replacement.

Can you supply a replacement remote?

Yes. Handsets can usually be replaced and re-paired, or the receiver replaced where the original system is obsolete.

Why does our motor keep tripping?

Repeated tripping normally means the motor is overloaded by a mechanical problem — binding guides, worn bearings or spring imbalance. That underlying cause needs to be corrected.

Do you upgrade old control gear?

Yes, including modern control stations, safety devices and, where suitable, remote or key-switch operation.
